3 STEPS TO ENSURE YOUR PET CAN GET FOUND
Microchips save lives and are the easiest way to reunite lost pets with their loved ones.
It is a great time to make sure your dog's chip is registered and up-to-date with your current contact information.
What is a Microchip? A microchip is a small chip implanted under your pet’s skin. The microchip contains an identification number that links to your address and contact information. In order for a microchip to work, you will need to register the microchip and keep your contact information up to date. If you haven't gotten your dog microchipped yet, consider getting it done.
What are the Benefits? The benefits of microchipping are undeniable. Microchips reunite hundreds of pets with their families. They are an easy, inexpensive and non-invasive way to make sure you can find a lost pet. Microchips can never break or fall off, unlike collars and ID tags. I always encourage all pet parents to have their pets microchipped.
Here are the three steps for checking and updating your contact information with your pet's microchip registry:
1: IS YOUR PUP CHIPPED?
If you don't know if your pup is chipped visit the vet’s office, animal shelter, or animal control to have them scanned. Not all microchips work on the same frequency so ask if they use a "universal scanner".
2: GETTING YOUR PUPS MICROCHIP NUMBER TYPE/BRAND
Call your vet’s office or the shelter/rescue where you adopted your pet to check if they have your dog's chip records.
AAHA Universal Pet Microchip Lookup site — here you can plug in the number, and the site will tell you if and with which registry the chip is registered.
3: CHECK & UPDATE YOUR CONTACT INFORMATION
Now that you have your pet's registry information visit their website to update your contact info. Update your information and provide multiple emergency contacts in case you lose your pet while you are out of town.
