While we love our dogs to the moon and back, there are times when they are real stinkers – literally. Dirty messes, marking, & accidents can happen at any age.
As someone who lives and works with dogs, I visit homes where some owners have become “nose blind,”. I frequently get to the dogs level to see and experience things from the dog's perspective and fall upon the stench that lurkes in dog beds, rugs, carpets and hardwood floors. Likewise, when I see dogs presenting with conditions in their paws, eyes, skin and/or respiratory issues there are many instances where a good thorough cleaning with a non toxic cleaner can be the answer to clear both health issues as well as marking and messing in the house.
For many familiies it just makes sense to start with changing cleaning products as a first line of defense. The EPA reports toxicity levels in homes that use household cleaners can be 2 to 5 times higher than environmental toxins. The average household cleaning products we use ultimately create a toxic environment for our dogs.
If you are concerned about a stench or a condition your dog may be presenting with consider the household cleaning products you are using and the high toxicity levels you are exposing your dog to. Common household cleaners you will want to avoid are those that contain extremely toxic substances like ammonia, bleach, phthalates, glycol ethers, dioxane, formaldehyde, phenol and the list is too extensive for me to name them all.
To stop house soiling and marking, there is nothing more important than deep cleaning to discourage your dog from going back to "that" location to pee/poop or mark. (BE CAREFUL, There are a ton of products on the market that claim to do the dirty work but do nothing.
